Luxor Temple was built not for a single god or pharaoh, but for the renewal of kingship itself. Its colonnades, courts and monumental gateways form one of the most atmospheric sites in Egypt.
Unlike the remote necropolises of the West Bank, the temple remains woven into the modern city. It is especially affecting after sunset, when the stone glows and the surrounding life of Luxor continues beyond its walls.

Evening visits reveal the temple at its most atmospheric. The site is level and relatively easy to navigate, with time best allowed for the processional colonnade and the Avenue of Sphinxes.
